Lucas still hoped to make his own sequel trilogy eventually. Even at the time, Lucasfilm made clear that these stories were not the "official" story of what happened to the characters. It and the comic series Dark Empire were the first Expanded Universe series to imagine what would happen to fans' favorite characters. Heir to the Empire was published in 1991, nearly ten years after Return of the Jedi. The story originally published with that title, a book by author Timothy Zahn, is perhaps the most beloved bit of the Legends Expanded Universe. Yet, if George Lucas's own Padawan learner Dave Filoni really is calling his film Heir to the Empire, it's the perfect choice for what would be an otherwise impossible movie. With three new Star Wars movies in the works, fans are excited for all of them.
